Sabiha Gokcen Airport , Istanbul’s second airport after Ataturk Airport in Yesilkoy, has doubled the number of its passengers as a result of introducing international flights.
The airport’s passenger number rose by 96 percent in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the same period last year, while the airport operator ISG expects to reach a figure of 11 million passengers by the end of the year. A total of 6.6 million passengers preferred Sabiha Gokcen Airport in 2009.
In order to handle the increase in passenger numbers and air traffic, a second runway is currently being built and will allow the airport to serve 15 million passengers per annum.
The new, 3,500-meter long, 60-meter wide runway is expected to cost TRY 500 million and is to be built by HEAS, an affiliate of Turkey’s Ministry of Defense.
